It wasn't a difficult decision… whether or not to pop into my local branch of Angling Direct, as I'm in there most weeks, but this week was slightly different as they had top carp angler Terry Hearn making an appearance.
Actually he was there for most of the day, chatting, explaining rigs, selling a few copies of his book, and obviously promoting sponsors products, but mainly it was a day for meeting the public.
I've seen Terry, probably like you guys have, at many of the carp shows, but this was the first time I had a chance to chat to him face to face. I should have been in work myself, but wangled a couple of hours off!
Terry officially started at 10am, but was there early to set up, and so was I, and after a quick 'hello' to the lads in the shop it was over to Mr Hearn!
And what a lovely bloke he is! And I'm not just saying that for effect, Terry comes across as a very genuine guy.
After a few pleasantries I ask a question I've always been interested in, and that's whether he still loves his fishing now that it's become his living, the books, the column… the deadlines?
Terry's reply 'Yes, I still love catching!' which is good for all of us, as hopefully it will mean more books and articles from this very thoughtful angler. Saying that, he went on to say how he would forgo a big fish on a crowded water nowadays for a more peaceful venue that perhaps didn't quite hold the absolute monsters he's been renowned for catching. Which was quite an insight, but probably what most of us want out on the bank... a bit of peace and quiet.
I then asked what was happening on the book front, and Terry reckons he started writing a few chapters last year but got a bit side tracked, and now plans to pick up the pen again towards the end of the year and hopefully have something sorted for next year.
So I wondered if the book would have a different theme this time, but Terry says it'll still be about him catching some great fish, and will basically pick up from where the last book finished. Can't wait mate!
All to quickly it was time for me to go, so I thanked Terry for having a chat, and also said my goodbyes to the lads at the shop.
As one of my local tackle shops, I have to give them a shout as they really do look after me... as they do with all their customers. With a huge shop, and a massive product range that's displayed over two floors, there's not much they don't have.
And even then, they'll do their best to order stuff in if you need it.
