Chatting to Phil Smith recently, we were both lamenting on some fairly average results through January.
But as Phil says, targeting specimen fish often leads to fairly regular barren patches between captures, as you might expect.
Then again, as he proved last week, when they do come along, it makes it all the better!
Phil caught a cracking barbel of 15lb 4ozs from the River Anker, his 5th '15' from different rivers, and now the river's new record! Phil let on that he was originally due to go perching, but as the weather was so mild he thought he'd try for a barbel instead... an inspired decision mate!
It seems Phil didn't even think it would be particularly big when he first hooked the monster, then changed his mind as it did it's best to avoid capture.
If you want the full story have a look at Phil's blog, Travelling Man. It's always an interesting read, with regular updates on Phil's outings... including the story behind this rather handsome pike he caught just the other day, click here.
