It's always good when one of your mates introduces you to someone who's interested in the same things as you are.
So when a friend at work asked if I'd heard of an angler called Tommy Duncan-Dunlop, I looked at a bit vague! He went on to explain that Tommy fished for carp, and that he was pretty damn good at it, in fact, fishing in the World Carp Classic since 2007, he's been a member of the winning team in 2007, 2008, and 2009 in which he won the whole lot… I was suddenly all ears...
I did some homework, and found out that Tom is a top carp angler who loves competing in the competitions. So besides the World Carp Classic wins, there's the British Carp Angling Championships, where he's appeared in a final and four semi's, and last year moved further afield to take part in the 2011 Carp Angling World Championships on the St Lawrence river in New York state... this guy loves his carp fishing!
As my mate knew Tom, and had fished with him a few times, it wasn't long before numbers were exchanged, and soon we started chatting. We've kept in touch ever since, and I've been chasing Tom for a few words and pics on some of his angling forays.
Tom admits, he's never been hot on the 'tech' side of things, so sending pics, let alone words, has been a bit of a problem. So when word came through that he was, once again, taking part in the Carp Classics at Lake Bolsena in Italy - pairing up with Martin Locke, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get a few live reports going... but sod's law prevailed, and the lads ended up in a bad swim and didn't have any action, with no fish coming out anywhere near them... so there wasn't much to tell in the end.
But after a little chat this week Tom's sent in some info on a couple of recent outings, and the first has a serious reason for being out on the bank... Help for Heroes.
Mark and Stuart King, from the Claret Wine bar in Cheam, Surrey, won the auction to fish with a World Carp Champion, and so help raise money for this great cause. Enjoying a great days fishing at Thorpe Lea, both lads had PB's with carp of 19lb and 20lb.
Tom asked me to pass on his thanks to Gary at Thorpe Lea for hosting the day, and Simon Locke at Solar, for providing bait and tackle. If any of you want to do your bit for Help for Heroes I've put a link at the bottom of this article.
Large waters seem to be the thing that gets Tom going, and he spends a lot of his time in europe, especially on French waters like Cassien, Rainbow, Graviers, and Saussiee. Fishing at Bob Davies water, Lac Serreire, a few weeks back, he had a cracking time banking an 18lb Koi, 4 x 30s, 6 x 40s, and to top it off, a 51lb 4oz whacker!
So for all you tackle geeks here's Tom's set-up: 12' Nash 3.5lbTC NRXD rods, Diawa reels loaded with 16lb Ultima Ultra line, 40lb Solar Unleaded leader, Solar 4oz brown Weed Effect leads, Solar 25lb Brown easy-strip hooklink, size 6 Solar 101 Strong Hold hook. And all fish were caught on Solar Club Mix boilies.
