So, did you get a copy of Seeking Shadows for Christmas? No, well you are definitely missing out on yet another one of Martin’s cracking DVD’s!
Initially set around his acceptance as a member to the picturesque Milton Abbas Lake in Dorset. Martin targets the very large carp on this 8 acre, tree-lined venue, which also boasts some good sized fish of many other species, that also get the chance to appear on film in their natural surroundings… and all looked after by ‘game keeper’ Wayne Little.
Starting with a few days on the lake to get the season going, it’s not long before Martin’s into the carp, including a beautiful 39lb mirror.
Interspersed with scenes from fellow members Tim Norman, who takes on the crucians, and Neil Mitchell who banks a monster common, we even get to see Martin join Wayne when he has a go at stalking some of the lakes larger residents.
But with Wayne having broken the British record for blue sharks with a 222lb whopper the year before, Martin let on to me recently that it was an opportunity not to be missed for them to organise a trip to the Celtic Deeps to chase some blue’s and porcy’s.
I did a write up earlier on this site about the encounter, and it’s a great section in the DVD… including the use of a customised laundry trolley?!!
With excursions onto the river for barbel, and a trip up to Scotland for a spot of salmon fishing, Martin likes to keep himself busy, but thoughts of Milton Abbas are always in the back of his mind, and as Autumn turns to Winter he returns to the lake for some end of season carping… which results in some stunning captures.
There’s no heavy emphasis on tackle, rigs, or baits, but Martin lets us see how he prepares for his carping, and with some great underwater shots, we can see how his set-up works.
Full of atmosphere, shots of the varied wildlife are blended in with the fishing action, to capture the feel of the changing seasons that go to make up this anglers year… and probably the best compliment I can give the film, is that I was chomping at the bit to get out on the bank by the end!
